Student Career Confusion After Matric

In this blog, I’m going to talk about something many students face: Should you learn computers right after matriculation?

These days, almost everyone—teachers, relatives, and even your own parents—encourages you to take up computer courses right after finishing school. But is it really necessary to start immediately?

Is It Important to Learn Computers Right After Matric?

The simple answer is: not always. So, why do people push you toward computer learning so soon?

Mostly, it’s because they want to keep you engaged and away from distractions like excessive gaming or wasting time. Parents believe that keeping you busy with a course will help you stay focused.

But Is It Actually Useful?

Yes—and no.

Why “Yes”?

If you enroll in a good institute that teaches computers properly and gives you real knowledge, then yes—it’s absolutely worth it. Learning basic computer skills at a young age can open doors to many future opportunities.

Why “No”?

On the flip side, there are many institutes that only care about making money. They don’t provide proper education, and you end up wasting time and money. That’s why choosing the right institute is very important—especially when your parents are encouraging you to take a course.

Students Learning Computers

What Should You Learn as a Beginner?

If you’re completely new to computers, start with these:

  • IT Fundamentals
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

These will help you build a strong foundation, and even if you don’t continue in the tech field, this knowledge will still benefit you in your studies or career.

Already Know the Basics?

If so, skip the beginner stuff and explore these skills:

  • Web Development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Video Editing
  • Graphic Design

These skills not only help you grow but can also lead to freelance opportunities or online jobs.

Learning Computers from YouTube

Learning from YouTube: A Controversial Option

YouTube is full of free and advanced tutorials, sometimes even better than what you’ll find in institutes. But parents often think YouTube is just for fun or a way to avoid studying.

It’s up to you to decide and show them that online learning is real and powerful. In my case, my parents didn’t allow me to learn from YouTube—but I still believe it’s a valuable resource if used correctly.

Hope this blog helped you decide whether learning computers after matric is the right step for you. Stay tuned for more blogs and don’t forget to share!
